Sculpture Speaks Louder Than Words – Barry Flanagan Palazzo Collicola, Musei Civici di Spoleto (continues until May 23). We are pleased to present a program for schools and the public alongside the exhibition ‘Sculpture Speaks Louder Than Words – Barry Flanagan’ curated by Mahler & LeWitt Studios alumna Jo Melvin and supported by the artist’s estate.
Public Program: Jo Melvin, James Cave, Adelaide Cioni, Toby Christian, Gertrude Gibbons. Schools Program: led by Giulia Filippi, with Liceo Artistico di Spoleto and Accademia di Belle Arti di Perugia.

Gertrude Gibbons/Jo Melvin and students from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Perugia: ‘Where is my voice?’, with Barry Flanagan’s ‘O for orange U for you: poem for the lips’
Sala Pegasus, 12:00–12.45 A short film exploring aphasia, from the perspectives of both speaker and listener, followed by a recording of Flanagan’s experimental poem: both works highlight the vicissitudes of language and explore alternative modes of expression.

Shadows coalesce with text and speech in this new performance exploring the fragility of the printed word. Presented with the collaboration of students from the Accademia Belle Arti Perugia.

An exploration of language and visuality: “A performance lecture on infinity or, a bunch of questions with impossible answers, revolving around patterns, translation and the human condition (and yes, thank god there will be pictures).”

James Cave – The Desert Hills Fan Out Like Playing Cards
In this performance for piano and field recordings (gathered by Nyla Van Ingen), Cave imagines Spoleto as a place filled with sonic ghosts from different musical eras and parlays with historical figures through the language of music.

jocjonjosch – in negotiation
Casa Romana, Musei Civici di Spoleto
Supported by Horizon Foundation and Nicole Beutler Projects. ‘In Negotiation’ commissions a large-scale ceramic sculpture by the English-Swiss collective jocjonjosch, developing their experimental thinking around collaborative making practices. The collective began developing the sculpture on a research residency at the Mahler & LeWitt Studios in 2024. Info>

Palazzo Collicola, Musei Civici di Spoleto
Peter Benson Miller’s residency at the Mahler & LeWitt Studios supports his curatorial work for the exhibition dedicated to the painter Filippo Marignoli (Perugia, 1926 – Seattle, 1995), marking the centenary of the artist’s birth. The exhibition is promoted by the Marignoli di Montecorona Foundation. Info>

Supported by Fondazione Carla Fendi and the Kira A. Princess of Prussia Foundation. Avant-garde icon Laurie Anderson is joined by genre-defying string innovators Eyvind Kang and Martha Mooke to workshop their new trio SPIN at the Mahler & LeWitt Studios ahead of its debut at the Spoleto Festival. Lembit Beecher: Between Generations

Presented by American Academy in Rome and Mahler & LeWitt Studios. Samuel Barber Rome Prize winner Lembit Beecher presents a world-premiere of a movement from ‘A Book of Falsehoods’, composed during residencies at the American Academy in Rome and the Mahler & LeWitt Studios. Info coming soon>

Spoleto Vocal Arts Workshop
The 2026 Spoleto Vocal Arts Workshop is organised in conjunction with Vocal Masterclass Stockholm and The Luxon Rose Trust. Dedicated to the next generation of singers, Jeremy Carpenter and Matthew Rose are joined by a team of world leading coaches.
