Sophie Cundale
Artist in Residence

Sophie Cundale is a multi-disciplinary artist based in London. Her film work and writing explores states of extreme emotion, spaces of intimacy and points of personal transition through narrative. These psychodramas are often drawn around the complexities of a central protagonist or relationship. During her residency at the Mahler & LeWitt Studios, Cundale will be continuing to write her first novel, Half-Life, an erotic science fiction about a woman who falls in love with nuclear waste. Following the residency in February 2024, the first act of Half-Life will be made available as an audio recording through the Castello Di Rivoli Digital Cosmos online platform.

Most recently, her written work was presented at Energy Cultures, a symposium at Castello Di Rivoli, Turin and performed at Plaza Plaza, London, in 2023. Her first major solo show opened at South London Gallery and Bonington Gallery in 2020, with a large scale film work commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella. A new body of sculptural work was exhibited at Kapp Kapp Gallery, Philadelphia in a duo show with Penny Goring in 2021. Previous work has been commissioned by Serpentine Galleries; and shown at Temporary Gallery, Cologne, Spike Island, Bristol, Govett-Brewster Gallery, New Zealand, Catalyst Arts, AMINI festival, Belfast, VCD festival, Beijing, Chisenhale Gallery, London and Innsbruck Biennale, Austria; and hosted on vdrome.org.
