Artist in Residence

Kathleen Henderson is a visual artist living and working in the Delaware River Valley, USA. She is the founder and Executive Director of Studio Route 29, a progressive art studio in Frenchtown, New Jersey which provides artists with disabilities the space, materials and support to explore an artistic practice.
Prior to Studio Route 29, Kathleen was the special projects manager and staff artist at Creative Growth in Oakland CA. She was the founding editor of the Creative Growth magazine, which examined and celebrated the unfolding and expanding world of art and disability.
Her work has been the subject of numerous solo shows in LA, and San Francisco as well as the Drawing Center in New York. She has received a National Endowment for the Arts grant and is in the collections of the Hammer Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Henderson writes: “Fascism has come to America and many artists here are finding ways to meet the moment. I will be exploring through drawing an investigation into how we got here and looking at ways artists throughout history have responded. I am also excited to be invited to the Mahler & LeWitt studios to look into the possibility of providing artists with disabilities a potential place for artistic exploration and rejuvenation. There is a palpable sense of solidarity among artists with disabilities and the progressive art studios that support them. Several art residencies have recently become accessible to all artists and this momentum towards inclusion and recognition opens the way for a more interesting and vital art world.”
