Joseph Kohlmaier
Artist in Residence

Joseph Kohlmaier is an artist, teacher, and the creative director of experimental choral ensemble Musarc, which he founded in 2008. Joseph’s interdisciplinary practice, which brings together performance, research and teaching, curatorial projects, design, and publishing, has been a driving force in the development of the choir and its open, experimental and research-led approach. With Musarc, Joseph has developed an extensive track-record of performances, commissions and collaborations with artists and composers including Holly Herndon and Mat Dryhurst, Jennifer Walshe, Jay Bernard, Lin Chiwei, Laure Provost, Lina Lapelytė, Sam Belinfante, Neil Luck and many others; and organisations in the UK and abroad, including Artangel, Serpentine Gallery, BBC Proms, London Contemporary Music Festival, Palais de Tokyo (Paris), the Royal Academy, Extra City (Antwerp), Serpentine Gallery, MK Gallery, Wysing Polyphonic, STUK (Leuwen) Cafe OTO, Bold Tendencies and Whitechapel Gallery.
Joseph is Associate Teaching Professor in Critical and Contextual Studies at the School Art, Architecture and Design, London Metropolitan University, where his research centres on embodiment, the voice, and the choral as a research methodology. He is one of the founding directors of graphic design practice Polimekanos (2001–2020); Cours de Poétique, an independent publishing imprint with a focus on art, performance and new music; and Field Studies, a transdisciplinary summer school exploring new approaches to creative practice and collaboration in contemporary art, performance and music.
