William Corwin is a sculptor and writer based in New York.  As a sculptor, much of his imagery is drawn from interviews with archeologists concerning ancient symbolism. Lucy Lippard has described his work: “Where modernist and minimal sculpture have striven to detach from all meaning, Corwin welcomes it back, propelling viewers back into an era of belief.” As a writer, he has been a regular reviewer and interviewer at the Brooklyn Rail for fifteen years and has also written for Frieze, Art Papers, Art & Antiques, and Mutt Magazine. While a resident at the Spoleto Festival, he will work on a sculpture project loosely based on the tradition of sacrificial tree offerings to Jupiter that were a local tradition in Spoleto, and as a writer he will be working on a history of early childhood education for a catalog for an exhibition on the original (Fröebelian) kindergarten and its influence on Modernism.
